PRESSURE CAPACITY SCREEN

Maximum tank PSI is not the pressure available at your tool

Check a basic pressure conflict, then separate tank capacity, regulation, delivered airflow and pressure under operating flow.

A simple exclusion check

Compare the tool’s specified operating pressure with the compressor’s published maximum on the same pressure reference. In a hypothetical example, a tool requiring 110 PSI cannot be supported at that pressure by a compressor whose stated maximum is 100 PSI. This establishes a specification conflict without a detailed simulation.

Reverse the example: a 90 PSI tool and a compressor with a 125 PSI maximum. The maximum is no longer the obvious limiting number. It still does not tell you how much air the compressor delivers at 90 PSI, or whether that pressure reaches the tool during use.

Keep four labels separate

Tank maximum, automatic switch pressures, regulator setting and tool operating pressure describe different parts of the system. The pressure checker only compares the first and last. It does not choose a regulator setting or model the switch cycle.

A compressor flow rating also has a pressure condition. A published CFM figure at 40 PSI is not evidence for the same output at 90 PSI. ToolSpecLab retains each flow-and-pressure pair and avoids constructing an unsupported curve between isolated specifications.

Static and working readings differ

Porter-Cable distinguishes static pressure from dynamic pressure while air flows. The regulator and hose can both contribute to the difference. Consequently, an idle gauge reading does not settle a complaint that a tool loses performance while operating.

The practical next step is to follow the tool and compressor manufacturers’ setup and measurement instructions for the complete air path. Record where the pressure was measured and whether the tool was operating. Never exceed the tool or system component ratings in an attempt to compensate for an unidentified restriction. When no working-pressure evidence is available, the match remains a preliminary specification screen.

A maximum-pressure check can identify a clear conflict. Passing it leaves airflow and pressure under use to be verified.
