A compressor buying checklist for your actual workshop

Build a practical brief covering tools, work patterns, power, space, noise, accessories and evidence before comparing offers.

TRY THE NUMBERS

Your workshop checklist

Change the inputs, then calculate.

Start with one real job

Write down the tool models you plan to run and the work they will perform. Include the longest expected work session and whether tools run together. “Occasional wheel changes with this impact wrench” is a more useful brief than “general garage use,” because it makes the intended equipment and pattern visible.

Ingersoll Rand’s selection questions cover equipment, quantity, usage, flow, pressure, power supply and portability. Use those categories to organize the brief. Separate a purchase requirement from a preference: an unavailable electrical supply can eliminate a model before noise or tank capacity becomes decisive.

Record the workshop constraints

Measure the available location, access route and storage space. Keep machine dimensions separate from the clearances required by the manual. Note whether the unit must move between floors, travel in a vehicle or remain beside a bench. A wheeled product can still be unsuitable for the route you have in mind.

List acceptable operating hours and the people close to the workspace. Compare published sound figures with their measurement conditions where those are provided; avoid treating every dB claim as an identical test. Record the available voltage and circuit requirements for qualified verification where necessary.

Compare a complete purchase

Include the compressor, appropriate hose, compatible fittings and any air treatment required by the intended tool or finish. Add model-specific maintenance items, warranty terms and access to service. Keep these as separate budget lines so a low machine price does not conceal an incomplete setup.

Use the checklist to mark each requirement as confirmed, unresolved or not applicable. Save the selected model numbers and source links with your brief. Before purchasing, revisit unresolved requirements and verify the current product revision and offer. A completed checklist documents your decision; it does not replace the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Define the job and installation first. Then compare compressors against the same brief instead of choosing from tank size alone.
